06. Winssinger Mansion

SATURDAY 15 and SUNDAY 16 MARCH 2025

Meeting Point

Rue de l'Hôtel des Monnaies 66, 1060 Saint-Gilles

This Art Nouveau mansion with a wide façade of white stone was built by Victor Horta between 1894 and 1897 for the engineer Camille Winssinger, a close collaborator of Ernest Solvay. There was a winter garden and a large stairwell bathed in light, the walls of which were painted with abundant vegetation. In 1927-1929, the façade and interior underwent changes following the transformation of the house into an apartment building.
In 1946, the architect Henri Jacobs (son) built a large annex to serve as offices for the insurance company "Le Lion belge", in place of the garden. Passionate about the work of Victor Horta, its current owner restored the mansion to its former glory with the help of the architect Barbara Van der Wee, a Horta specialist, and restored the garden to its original purpose.
