17. Public Centre for Social Welfare of Brussels

The Museum of the Public Centre for Social Welfare (CPAS) of the City of Brussels is dedicated to the history of social assistance, from its medieval origins to the present day. It holds the archives of the hospitals and charitable institutions of the Ancien Régime as well as those related to public assistance from the French period onwards. The CPAS is part of the St. Pierre University Hospital complex which was built between 1929 and 1935 based on plans by the architect J.-B. Dewin. The functional architecture is discreetly punctuated by Art Deco elements. The façades are made of brick with integrated bluestone elements, while the upper floors are concrete. The windowframes are in metal, with characteristic latticework enclosing small stained glass windows. Built between 1937 and 1939 by the architects Gaston Brunfaut and Stanislas Jasinski, the Jules Bordet Institute is also functionalist in style.
