In 1913, the Saint-Josse local council demolished some slum housing accessed by alleyways to build new social housing and a building containing washing baths and a swimming pool. The competition for this building was won by the architects Bytebier and Schaessens, but construction was delayed by the First World War and the Great Depression. It finally got underway in 1930, after the two architects had revised their designs to take account of technological advances as well as the advent of the high Art Deco style. After being closed to the public for many years, the baths underwent a long and meticulous restoration before re-opening at the end of 2019.
